Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (MPPP) is a local authority which administers Penang Island. This agency is under Penang state government. MPPP are responsible for public health and sanitation, waste removal and management, town planning, environmental protection and building control, social and economic development and general maintenance functions of urban infrastructure. The MPPP main headquarters is located at the City Hall (in front of The Esplanade), George Town.
Penang is one of the thirteen states of Malaysia and is situated in the north of the Peninsular. Local Government is the third tier in the administrative structure of the Malaysian Government. In Penang, local government has been in existence since 1856.
The Municipal Council of Penang Island administers an area of approximately 299.65 sq. kilometres with a multi-racial population of about 660,000. The Municipal Council of Penang Island was established on 15 December 1976 under the Local Government Act, 1976. The Council is an organisation that provides local government services on the island. The Council’s activities and operation have direct bearing on the quality of life of the people.
